A city in the central part of West Yorkshire, in the north-central part of England. It is part of the Bradford district, including the surrounding area. It is located about 15km west of Leeds, in a valley at the eastern foot of the Pennines, and the town area spreads over the surrounding hills. It flourished as a market town in the 13th century. In the 14th century, the woolen textile industry emerged and developed, but from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, the production of worsted textiles became more popular, replacing the woolen textiles that had been used until then, and later, the production of alpaca, mohair, silk, velvet, etc. also began. It became an important wool purchasing centre, and overseas trade was also active. In the second half of the 20th century, the textile industry declined, and industries such as engineering, papermaking, and printing developed. There are many Victorian-era buildings, such as the town hall and the wool exchange. Bradford University is located here. The area of ​​the district is 366 km2 . The district population is 493,100 (estimated 2006). Urban population: 293,717 (2001).

[Died] April 25, 1892, New York. American marine painter. Self-taught, he was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York. He painted ships and oceans seen from the coasts of Massachusetts, Labrador, and Nova Scotia. He participated in several of I. Hayes's Arctic expeditions, and was the first painter to paint American coastal landscapes close to the Arctic Circle. His most famous work is The Panther at Melville Bay (1875), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.

The town's name comes from the name of a river in New Hampshire, the homeland of early settlers. It is the center of the Pennsylvania oil fields. Oil was discovered in 1871 and the town prospered rapidly, reaching 40% of the world's total production in 1881. Oil production has declined since then, but the town is home to a number of related factories, centered around an oil refinery. Other products produced are lumber and bricks. Allegheny State Park and the state's only designated Indian reservation are located nearby. Population: 9,625 (1990).
