Mukabakiyama

Japanese:
Mukabakiyama

A mountain in the northwest of Nobeoka City, in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture. The 80-meter-high Gyokuro-no-taki waterfall falls from a cliff halfway up the mountain. It is a rocky mountain of granite porphyry at an elevation of 830 meters, with steep cliffs running from east to west. Gyokuro-yama was formed in the Miocene epoch of the Tertiary Period, when granite porphyry intruded into cracks caused by the rise of the Ookueyama granite body in the northwest. This vein of rock continues from west to east with Mt. Tansuke, Mt. Yahazu, Mt. Hiei, Mt. Gyokuro-yama, and Mt. Eno, all of which have steep mountain forms. The mountain is divided into Mt. O in the west and Mt. Me in the east (799 meters), with a waterfall in between. Located near Nobeoka City and accessible by bus, it is a popular tourist destination for local residents. It is part of the Sobokatamuki Quasi-National Park. The name was given to the area because the shape of the gaiter, which is a leather gaiter used in ancient horse riding, resembles the shape of a mountain.
