Penny Cyclopaedia

[The emergence of popular magazines and women's magazines]
The Industrial Revolution and urbanization created a new readership seeking cheap reading material, and entertainment magazines began to appear, competing for large circulations. In Britain, following competition from the Penny Magazine (1832-46) and the Penny Cyclopaedia (1833), the Chamber's Journal reached a circulation of 90,000 copies in 1845. In Germany, following the Pfennigmagazin (1833) and others, the Familienblatt recorded a circulation of 400,000 copies in the 1970s.
