Suzdal' (English spelling)

A city in Vladimir Oblast in the western part of the Russian Federation. It is located about 30 km north of the regional capital Vladimir, along the Kamenka River. It is one of the tourist cities in the northeastern suburbs of Moscow, known as the "Golden Ring." In the 12th century, it was the capital of the Rostov-Suzdal Principality, followed by the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. At the end of the 14th century, it became part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, and flourished as the center of the Russian Orthodox Church until around the 18th century. Many historical buildings remain, including the Rozhestvensky Cathedral and Spasoevfimiev Monastery in the Kremlin (fortress), which was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) in 1992 under the name "White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal."

ロシア連邦西部、ウラジーミル州の都市。州都ウラジーミルの北約30キロメートル、カメンカ川沿いに位置する。「黄金の環」と呼ばれるモスクワ北東近郊の観光都市の一つ。12世紀にロストフスーズダリ公国、続いてウラジーミルスーズダリ公国の首都が置かれた。14世紀末にモスクワ大公国の一部になり、以降18世紀頃までロシア正教会の中心地として栄えた。1992年に「ウラジーミルとスーズダリの白亜の建造物群」の名称で世界遺産（文化遺産）に登録されたクレムリン（城塞）内のロジュジェストベンスキー聖堂やスパソエフフィミエフ修道院をはじめ、歴史的建造物が数多く残っている。
