Banks Islands

Japanese: バンクス[諸島](英語表記)Banks Islands
Banks Islands
A group of volcanic islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean, located in the northern part of the New Hebrides Islands that make up the Republic of Vanuatu. The population is about 4,000. The main islands are Gaua, which has a crater lake six kilometers in diameter in the center, Vanua Lava, Uleparapara, Mota, and Mere Lava. The volcanoes on Gaua and Vanua Lava erupted violently in 1965. The inhabitants are Melanesian, and there used to be a secret society of men called the Tamate. The men who belonged to this society would cover their bodies in costumes and appear before women and children as spirits of the dead, frightening them or destroying their belongings.
