A major private railway company with a network of railway lines between Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and the northern suburbs of Osaka. It is abbreviated as Hankyu. It was established in 1907 as Minoo-Arima Electric Tramway, later renamed Hanshin Express Railway, and merged with the former Keihan Electric Railway in 1943 to become Keihanshin Express Railway. In 1949, the Keihan Electric Railway line was separated. In 1973, the company was renamed to its current name. It has a railway length of 146.5 km. In addition to operating the Kobe Line, Kyoto Line, Takarazuka Line, etc., it also engages in real estate, distribution, and the Takarazuka Revue Company, and is the core of the Hankyu Group. The first president, Ichizo Kobayashi, came up with the idea of developing and selling housing land along the railway lines, and managing department stores at the terminals, which were pioneers among private railway companies. In June 2006, it acquired Hanshin Electric Railway, and in October of the same year, it was renamed Hankyu Hanshin Holdings. Currently, Hankyu Hanshin Holdings owns both Hankyu Railways and Hanshin Electric Railway as wholly owned subsidiaries.

京都〜大阪〜神戸間および大阪北郊に路線網をもつ大手私鉄。阪急と略称。1907年箕面(みのお)有馬電気軌道として設立，のち阪神急行電鉄と改称，1943年旧京阪電気鉄道を合併して京阪神急行電鉄となる。1949年京阪電気鉄道の路線を分離。1973年現社名に改称。鉄道延長146.5km。神戸線，京都線，宝塚線などを営業するほか，不動産，流通，宝塚歌劇団などを兼業，阪急グループの中核をなす。初代社長小林一三の着想による沿線の宅地造成と分譲，ターミナルデパートの経営は私鉄における先鞭となった。2006年６月阪神電気鉄道を買収，同年10月阪急阪神ホールディングスと改称した。現在は阪急阪神ホールディングスが，阪急電鉄と阪神電気鉄道を完全子会社として抱える体制となっている。
