A columnar structure used to prevent earth retaining walls from collapsing. A hole is drilled in the ground, and high-strength steel such as piano wire is inserted, with the tip of the hole fixed to the surrounding soil with cement or the like. The steel is then tensioned and the head is fixed to the target object such as an earth retaining wall. A standard one has a hole diameter of 10 to 15 cm, a length of several meters to several tens of meters, and a pull-out resistance of tens of tons or more. It is also used for the foundations of steel towers for power transmission lines. It has been in practical use in Japan since the 1960s, and earth anchor is a Japanese word.
