Ya'an

A prefecture-level city in the mid-west of Sichuan Province, China. It is located about 125 km southwest of the provincial capital, Chengdu, in the upper reaches of the Qingyi River, a tributary of the Min River, a part of the Yangtze River system. It has jurisdiction over two city districts and six counties, including Shimian (as of 2016). Population 1.572 million (2014). It was the capital of the former Xikang Province (1939-1955).

Located on the western edge of the Sichuan Basin, it is a key transportation hub with highways extending west to Tibet and south to the Yunnan region, and is a thriving center for the distribution of agricultural products and other goods. It is also a production area for tea such as Mengding Huangmei, which is grown in the nearby Mengshan Mountains and made into brick-shaped tea that is supplied to Tibet and the northwest. It is also a production and distribution center for medicinal herbs such as rhubarb and coptis. In addition to power plants, there are leather and food factories, and underground resources such as sulfur, copper, mica, and asbestos can be found nearby.

The city is also known as a habitat for giant pandas, and in 2006 the area including Tianquan, Lushan, and Baoxing counties in the north of the city was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Protection Areas (World Natural Heritage).

中国、四川(しせん)省中西部の地級市。省都成都(せいと)の南西約125キロメートル、揚子江(ようすこう)水系岷江(びんこう)の支流青衣江(せいいこう)上流に位置する。2市轄区、石棉(せきめん)など6県を管轄する(2016年時点)。人口157万2000(2014)。かつての西康(せいこう)省(1939~1955)の省都であった。

 四川盆地の西端にあり、ここから西へはチベット、南へは雲南(うんなん)地方への自動車道が延びる交通要地で、農産物などの物資集散が盛んである。付近の蒙山(もうざん)に産する「蒙頂黄芽(モンティンホワンヤー)」などの茶の産地でもあり、これらはれんが状の磚茶(たんちゃ)にしてチベットや西北地方に供給される。また、ダイオウ、オウレンなどの薬草の産地および集散地でもある。発電所のほか、皮革、食品などの工場があり、さらに、付近には硫黄(いおう)、銅、雲母(うんも)、石綿などの地下資源もみられる。

 ジャイアントパンダの生息地としても知られ、2006年には市北部の天全(てんぜん)県、芦山(ろざん)県、宝興(ほうこう)県をはじめとする地域が「四川ジャイアントパンダ保護区群」として世界遺産の自然遺産に登録された(世界自然遺産)。
