An island in western Indonesia. It faces the southeast coast of Sumatra across the Bangka Strait. It is generally low-lying, with the highest point at 692m above sea level. Along with the neighboring island of Belitung to the east, it is a world-famous tin-producing region, producing 60% of Indonesia's tin ore. Many Chinese workers are employed in the mining.
