…異地性化石の場合，遺骸が生活地より堆積地までの間，長距離を運搬されても，現地性化石と同時期のもの(同時的異地性化石)とみなされる。それに対して，いったん化石となったものが，その後の地殻変動などにより地層中より洗い出され，また再び別の地層中に埋没されたもの(異時的異地性化石)は誘導化石derived fossilあるいは二次化石，再堆積化石などと呼ばれる。
