Seo Jeong-ju (English spelling) Sŏ Chŏn-gju

Japanese: 徐廷柱 - じょていちゅう（英語表記）Sŏ Chŏn‐gju

1915‐2000
Korean poet. His pen name is Midang. He was born in Gochang, North Jeolla Province. He graduated from Seoul Central Buddhist College and entered the poetry world in 1936 with the publication of the poetry coterie magazine "Poets' Club." After liberation, he became a professor at Sorabol Arts University, and is currently a professor at Dongguk University and a member of the Korean Academy of Arts. "Flower Snake Collection," from his first collection of poems (1941), begins with the lines, "The backyard path of musk mint, A beautiful snake... What great sadness did it take to be born, and yet it has such an eerie appearance," and sings of the fateful suffering of human beings. [Masuo Omura]

韓国の詩人。号は未堂。全羅北道高敞生れ。ソウル中央仏教専門学校を卒業，1936年詩同人誌《詩人部落》を発刊して詩壇に登場。解放後ソラボル芸術大教授を経て，現在東国大教授，芸術院会員。第1詩集《花蛇集》(1941)所収の〈麝香薄荷（じやこうはつか）の裏庭道だ　美しき蛇……　どれほど大きな悲しみもて生まれたからとて，あれほど無気味な姿なのか〉という句で始まる〈花蛇〉は，人間の運命的業苦をうたっている。【大村益夫】
