A type of alkali pyroxene. Also known simply as aegirine. The English name acmite is synonymous with this. The crystals are often columnar and sometimes have sharp tips like an awl, so they are also called aegirine pyroxene. The chemical composition is the same as that of aegirine augite. This type of appearance is found in alkaline igneous rocks and is greenish in color. Large crystals are found in large quantities in nepheline syenite and its pegmatites. However, this type of occurrence does not exist in Japan, and only small crystals are found in syenite, trachyte, and alkali basalt. It also occurs in metamorphosed stratified manganese deposits and in certain types of quartz schist. Most of these crystals are massive or granular, and brownish in color. This type of occurrence is common in Japan. In Japan, it is found in Takakusayama, Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Iwagishima Island, Ochi County, Ehime Prefecture, and the Gozaisho Mine (closed) in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. As this mineral was first reported in Norway, it was named after the Scandinavian sea god Aegir.
