Montage (English spelling)

Japanese: モンタージュ（英語表記）montage

This refers to the "film editing" of movies. It refers to film theory on aesthetic and ideological issues that arose during the silent film era when combining films. Originally it means "assembly" in French. Léon Moussinac, a French film critic who first used the term, argued that montage is about giving rhythm to a film. This idea of montage as the essence of film was also discussed in the Soviet Union at the same time. Vsevolod Illarionovich Pudovkin considered montage to be the combination of individual shots to create a "cinematic reality," and considered it an extension of technical theory, but Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein developed a theory of montage that expected ideas to emerge from the collision and conflict between two shots. Eisenstein's concept, which corresponds to the principle of dialectical materialism (→ dialectics), had a great influence on later film theory.

映画の「フィルム編集」のこと。特に無声映画時代に起こった，フィルム結合の際の美学的思想的問題に関する映画理論をさす。元来はフランス語で「組み立て」の意味。最初にこの語を使ったフランスの映画批評家レオン・ムシナックは，モンタージュとは映画にリズムを与えることである，と主張した。このようにモンタージュを映画の本質論としてとらえる考え方は，同時期にソビエト連邦でも論じられた。フセボロド・イラリオノビッチ・プドフキンは各ショットを結合させて「映画的現実」をつくりだすことがモンタージュであると考え，技術論の延長線上でとらえたが，セルゲイ・ミハイロビッチ・エイゼンシュテインは二つのショットの衝突，葛藤により観念が生じることを期待するモンタージュ理論を展開。唯物弁証法（→弁証法）の原理に対応させてとらえたエイゼンシュテインのこの概念はのちの映画理論に大きな影響を及ぼした。
