A state in the northern part of the Deccan Plateau in India. It borders the states of Bihar and Orissa to the east, Gujarat and Rajasthan to the west, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to the south, and Uttar Pradesh to the north. With a total area of approximately 442,800 km2, it is the largest of the 25 states in India, excluding the state of Jammu and Kashmir, whose borders have not yet been established. Its population of 66.18 million (1991) is the sixth largest in the country. Most of the state is on the plateau, and its capital, Bhopal, is located at an altitude of 625 meters.
