Sayf al-Dawla

Sayf al-Dawla
916‐967
Monarch of the Hamdanid dynasty of Syria. Reigned 945-967. His name is a title meaning "Sword of the Nation." He invaded northern Syria, which was under the rule of the Ikhsid dynasty, from Mosul, capturing various cities, and established a government independent of the Hamdanid government in Mosul, centered on Aleppo. During this period, he defended Syria from attacks by the Byzantine Empire, which happened to be at its height, while also protecting writers and scholars such as philosopher Farabi, poet Mutanabbi, and Isbahani, author of the Book of Songs.
