Japanese: 口腔外科 - こうくうげか（英語表記）oral surgery

A branch of clinical medicine. Although the name suggests that surgery only applies to the inside of the mouth, it actually covers all areas involved in oral function, including surgical treatment of the upper and lower jaws, temporomandibular joints, face, and neck. In other words, it treats tooth extractions, benign tumors such as intra-jaw cysts, malignant tumors such as tongue cancer, salivary gland diseases, maxillofacial trauma such as jaw fractures, congenital abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate and mandibular prognathism, oral mucosal diseases, and temporomandibular joint ankylosis. The department is located in the dental and medical faculties of universities, as well as dental and medical universities.

臨床医学の一分野。文字のうえからは口の中のみを対象とする外科ととられがちであるが，実際には口腔内に限らず，口腔機能に関与する部分がすべて対象であるから，上下顎，顎関節，顔面，頸部などの外科的治療も含まれる。すなわち，抜歯をはじめ，顎骨内嚢胞などの良性腫瘍，舌癌などの悪性腫瘍，唾液腺疾患，顎骨骨折などの顎顔面外傷，先天異常の唇顎口蓋裂や下顎前突症，口腔粘膜疾患，顎関節強直症などの治療を行う。大学の歯学部，医学部および歯科大学，医科大学に診療科がおかれている。
