A general term for the prehistoric cultures that are considered to be the oldest human cultures in the New World. The Paleo-Indian culture is placed in the Upper Pleistocene to the early Alluvial Epoch, and is broadly divided into the Pre-Projectile Point culture, the Projectile Point culture, and the Paleo-Arctic culture based on differences in stone tool production techniques and associated fauna. The Pre-Projectile Point culture is characterized by crude flake stone tools and pebble tools, and is represented by the Pacaycasa culture and Ayacucho culture in Peru, and is dated to 14,000 to 15,000 years ago.

新大陸で最古の人類文化と解釈されている先史文化の総称。パレオ･インディアンPaleo‐Indian文化は時期的には上部洪積世から沖積世初頭に位置づけられ，石器製作技術や共伴する動物相のちがいにより，プレ･プロジェクタイル･ポイント文化，プロジェクタイル･ポイント文化，パレオ極北文化に大別される。プレ･プロジェクタイル･ポイント文化は粗雑な剝片石器や礫器に特徴づけられ，ペルーのパカイカサ文化，アヤクチョ文化などに代表され，1万4000～1万5000年以前に比定されている。
