The fifth caliph of the Abbasid dynasty. Reigned from 786 to 809. Some say he was born in 763. A representative ruler of the dynasty during its heyday, he personally invaded the Byzantine Empire three times in 797, 803, and 806, and handed down humiliating peace terms, but he struggled internally to suppress successive rebellions. For the first 17 years, he favored the Barmak family in domestic affairs, but their influence grew too great, so he exterminated them in 803 and took charge of politics himself. He is also famous as a character in The Thousand and One Nights.

アッバース朝第5代カリフ。在位786‐809年。生年は763年の説もある。この王朝の全盛期を代表する君主で，797,803,806年の3回にわたってビザンティン帝国に親征，屈辱的講和条件を与えたが，対内的には相次ぐ反乱の鎮圧に苦慮した。内政では，最初の17年間はバルマク家一門を重用したが，その権勢があまりにも強大になりすぎたために，803年にこれを断絶させ，自ら政治に臨んだ。《千夜一夜物語》の登場人物としても有名。
