The ruins of a Bactrian city from the 3rd to 1st century BC are located on a river plateau at the confluence of the Amu Darya and Kokcha rivers in northeast Afghanistan. It was excavated by Bernard P. Bernard in 1964-79. It is protected by hills to the east and rivers to the west and south, has a double moat to the north, a city wall with bastions, and one gate. A main street runs about 2 km from the city gate along the eastern hill to the Kokcha riverbank, and to the west of the street are the royal palace and other administrative districts, residential areas, tombs, temples, and gymnasiums (physical and intellectual facilities), and an amphitheater on the eastern slope of the street.
