The 20th century saw a strong movement in the field of orchestral music, with CVStanford (1852-1924) and E. Elgar, followed by F. Delius (1862-1934), Holst, and Vaughan Williams. Representatives of the younger generation include W. Walton (1902- ) and M. Tippett (1905- ), but the representative of modern music is Britten, who demonstrated his outstanding talent in the fields of orchestral and choral music, as well as in operas such as "Peter Grimes" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

The origins of English folk music can be traced back to the activities of minstrels in the Middle Ages.

　20世紀に入るとまず管弦楽曲の分野に活発な動きが見られ，スタンフォードC.V.Stanford(1852‐1924)とE.エルガーに続き，デリウスF.Delius(1862‐1934)，ホルスト，ボーン･ウィリアムズらが活躍した。より若い世代の代表にはウォルトンW.Walton(1902‐　)やティペットM.Tippett(1905‐　)らが含まれるが，現代音楽の代表者はブリテンで，《ピーター･グライムス》や《真夏の夜の夢》などのオペラをはじめ，管弦楽曲や合唱曲の分野においても優れた手腕を発揮している。
