Greeneyes - Greeneyes (English spelling)

A marine fish belonging to the family Myctophiidae of the class Osteichthyes. Also known as Mejikari. It is found from central Honshu southwards and is caught in the deep sea. It is about 14 centimeters long, slender and has a cylindrical body. Its eye diameter is large and longer than its snout length. Its dorsal fin has 11 soft rays and a small adipose fin. It has about 55 to 60 lateral line scales. The tip of the lower jaw extends forward beyond the upper jaw. There are about 10 dark spots in a vertical row on its body. Six species of fish in the family Myctophiidae are known to live in the waters off Japan, and all of them are used in paste products and dried foods.

硬骨魚綱ハダカイワシ目アオメエソ科に属する海水魚。別名メヒカリ。本州中部以南に分布し、深海で漁獲される。全長14センチメートルほどで、細長く、胴部は円筒形である。眼径は大きく吻長(ふんちょう)より長い。背びれは11軟条で、小さい脂(あぶら)びれがある。側線鱗(そくせんりん)数は55～60個程度。下あごの先端は上あごより前に出る。体に暗色の斑紋(はんもん)が10個ほど縦列する。アオメエソ科の魚は日本近海に6種が知られ、いずれも練り製品や乾物などにされる。
