A marine fish belonging to the family Myctophiidae of the class Osteichthyes. Also known as Mejikari. It is found from central Honshu southwards and is caught in the deep sea. It is about 14 centimeters long, slender and has a cylindrical body. Its eye diameter is large and longer than its snout length. Its dorsal fin has 11 soft rays and a small adipose fin. It has about 55 to 60 lateral line scales. The tip of the lower jaw extends forward beyond the upper jaw. There are about 10 dark spots in a vertical row on its body. Six species of fish in the family Myctophiidae are known to live in the waters off Japan, and all of them are used in paste products and dried foods.
