Translated Plays - Honyakugeki

Japanese: 翻訳劇 - ほんやくげき

It means a play in which a play written in one language is translated into another language. Therefore, it is used to distinguish it from "adapted plays," which are plays that borrow the structure, characters, and ideas of foreign plays and rewrite them to a certain time period and characters in Japan, such as "Shirano Benjuro," an adaptation of "Cyrano de Bergerac." In Japan, in particular, reflecting the unique nature of the history of new theater, it has often been used in the narrow sense of Japanese translations of Western plays. Since the Bungei Kyokai and Jiyugekijo began their work by transplanting works by Shakespeare, Ibsen, and others in the Meiji period, the early history of the new theater movement can be said to be a history of staging translated plays. Despite the difficulties of differences in language, customs, and national character, there have been many performances of translated plays, and there is also a positive aspect in learning about the culture and ethnicity of other countries.

ある国語で書かれた戯曲を，ほかの国語に移し変えた劇の意。したがって，たとえば『シラノ・ド・ベルジュラック』を脚色した『白野弁十郎』のように，外国の戯曲の構成，人物，アイデアなどを借り，日本のある時代，人物に移して書き換えたものをいう「翻案劇」とは区別して用いられる。特に日本では新劇史の特殊性を反映して，欧米戯曲の日本語訳という意味の狭義に用いられる場合が多かった。明治の文芸協会，自由劇場がシェークスピア，イプセンなどの作品を移植することからその仕事を始めて以来，新劇運動初期の歴史は翻訳劇上演の歴史であったともいえる。言語，風俗習慣，国民性の違いからくる困難を伴いながらも翻訳劇の上演は多く，諸外国の文化や民族性などを知るプラスの面もある。
