A prominent family in the early Abbasid period. Three generations of the family served as viziers (viziers) or scribes, from the first caliph Abul Abbas (reigned 749-754) to the fifth caliph Harun al-Rashid (reigned 786-809). Khalid ibn Barmak, the son of the chief priest of a Persian Buddhist monastery, served as secretary to Abul Abbas and head of the tax office for Mansur, and his son Yahya became vizier to Rashid and wielded great influence in the Abbasid court together with his two sons Fadl and Ja'far. However, in 803, Ja'far was murdered, Yahya and Fadl were captured, and all the family property was confiscated.
