A general term for insects of the dipteran family Ceratopogonidae. There are about 60 genera, of which 4 are sanitary pests that suck the blood of humans and livestock. All are small, with a body length of 1-2 mm, and many have patterned wings that overlap when at rest. It is said that females of about 20 species of midges found in Japan are capable of sucking human blood. They mainly suck blood outdoors in the morning and evening, on exposed skin, and sometimes inside clothing. The larvae develop at the bottom of ponds, swamps, rivers, etc., so bites and injuries are most common near these breeding sites. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
