From 1761 to 1767 he lived in St. Petersburg, where he studied Russian language and history, and worked to scientifically organize the materials. From 1769 to 1805 he was a professor at the University of Göttingen. In addition to books such as Allgemeine nordische Geschichte (1772) (Outline of Nordic History), he criticized the absolutist systems of the German states in the Enlightenment periodical Staatsanzeiger (State Review) (18 volumes, 83-93).
