Japanese: ハンガー･ストライキ（英語表記）hunger strike

A type of sit-in in which people demonstrate by fasting or reducing their food intake. It is also called a hunger strike for short. Although it includes the word "strike," it is not a strike in the sense of a collective refusal to sell labor, but a type of demonstration. It is also widely used in general social movements, but in the labor movement, it is often a passive form of struggle, such as when movement leaders use it to inspire ordinary workers who have low morale, or when they use it as a substitute for a strike when the right to strike is not legally recognized.

座込みの一種で，絶食または減食によって示威するものをいう。略してハンストとも呼ばれる。ストライキの語が付いているが，労働力の販売を集団的に拒否する意味でのストライキではなく，デモンストレーションの一種である。一般の社会運動でも広く用いられるが，労働運動では，闘う士気の低調な一般労働者を鼓舞するために運動指導者が行う場合とか，またストライキ権が法認されていないときにストライキに代わるものとして行う場合など，むしろ消極的な闘争形態である場合が多いといってよい。
