A sturdy shoe-like claw found in large herbivorous mammals, suitable for supporting heavy bodies and running long distances. Typical examples are seen in odd-toed ungulates such as horses, tapirs, and rhinoceroses, and even-toed ungulates such as cattle, antelopes, deer, giraffes, and wild boars, but elephants also have hooves. It is a variant of the hooked claws found at the end of the fingers of most mammals, in which the nail wall that makes up most of the nails of monkeys and humans surrounds the terminal segment of the finger and becomes cylindrical, with the bottom of the cylinder being covered by a developed sole, completely encasing the tip of the toe just like wearing a shoe.
