A town in northwestern Uttar Pradesh, northern India. It is located about 160 km northeast of Delhi, at the southern foot of the Shibalik Mountains, on the eastern bank of the Ganges where it flows into the hills. It is a holy place for Hindus, and it is said that the footprints of the god Vishnu remain on the wall of the bathing fountain of the Daksheshwar Temple. Pilgrims from all over the country visit the town for the annual festival in April and the major festival held every 12 years. There are ruins of an ancient castle and temples. The Hardwar Dam (construction started in 1839), which dammed the Ganges, is the source of the Upper Ganges irrigation water, and hydroelectric power is also generated there. There is a power generating machinery factory of the Bharat Heavy Electrical Industries. Population 148,882 (1991).
