A former town in Gunma County, central Gunma Prefecture. It occupies Mt. Haruna and its southern foot, along the Karasu River basin. Shimomurota, a former post town on the Shinshu Kaido road, is a tourist base for Mt. Haruna. Rice, sericulture, and pear cultivation are carried out here. The Jindai Dance is performed at Haruna Shrine, and the Yatate Cedar tree (a natural monument) is located here. In October 2006, it was incorporated into Takasaki City. Area: 93.59 km2 . 群馬県中部,群馬郡の旧町。榛名山とその南麓,烏川の流域を占める。かつての信州街道の宿場町下室田は,榛名山の観光基地。米作,養蚕,ナシ栽培を行う。榛名神社に神代(じんだい)舞が伝わり,矢立杉(天然記念物)がある。2006年10月,高崎市へ編入。93.59km2。2万1763人(2005)。
