A contemporary American sculptor. Born in Los Angeles to poet Yonejiro Noguchi and an American woman, Noguchi spent his childhood in Japan before moving to the United States. He first studied sculpture under Borglum, and in 1927 travelled to France to become Brancusi's assistant. Since setting up a studio in New York in 1932, he has been uniquely active in the fields of public sculpture, landscape design, and stage art. Since the 1940s, he has experimented with robust and elegant forms that combine clay figurines with the organic abstract forms of Miro and Arp, pursuing new possibilities through a variety of experiments. He is also known for his garden designs, such as the Japanese garden (rock garden) at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, which took three years to complete from 1956, and the fountain at the 1970 Osaka World Expo, as well as the design of the lampshade "Akari." He continued to work in both Japan and the United States, based at the Noguchi Museum in New York, which was completed in 1985, and his studio in Mure-cho, Kagawa Prefecture (now Takamatsu City), but he passed away in New York on December 30, 1988 (Showa 63). In 1999 (Heisei 11), the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, which displays his works and studio, opened in Kagawa Prefecture. The land area is surrounded by the U-shaped Moere Marsh, and the park area, including the water surface, boasts an area of 189 hectares. It has attracted attention for its park design, which treats the entire vast park as a single sculptural work.
