...The rise of technocracy was against the backdrop of the growing self-consciousness of engineers as professionals and the accumulation of achievements that increased the pride of engineers, such as F.W. Taylor's "scientific management." Technocrats (advocates of technocracy) believed that the increased productivity brought about by technological progress should be utilized for the benefit of society as a whole, and that the social system should be reformed so that people could enjoy a material utopia. Efficiency and fairness were their basic principles.
