1727‐1815 Italian painter and printmaker. After training in Rome and Venice, he went to London in 1764 and spent the majority of his life working there. From 1773 he produced around 700 reproduction prints in the pointier technique, which uses density to create shadows and light, and achieved great success. The effect of his work is one that combines the elegance of the Rococo style with the elegance of neoclassicism. His sepia and color printing techniques are particularly suited to reproducing sketches, and this technique was popularized throughout Europe by his 50 disciples.
