The fleets of the former Russian Empire, the former Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation were based in the Baltic Sea. During the Russo-Japanese War, their main fleets were dispatched to the Far East, where they were attacked and annihilated by the Japanese Combined Fleet in the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905 .
