1418‐81 Italian sculptor. Born in Florence. Left his hometown after 1433. In 1442, he created the altar reliefs for the Modena Cathedral. He returned to Florence, but fled to northern Italy after being accused of theft. He worked on the decoration of the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini (c. 1449-c. 1457). This building was designed by Alberti for the mercenary captain and scholar Sigismondo Malatesta (1417-68), Prince of Rimini, to commemorate himself and his mistress Isotta degli Atti. Agostino created extremely thin bas-reliefs on the marble interior walls, depicting a variety of subjects that reveal Malatesta's skepticism of Christianity and his paganism.
