Chuzan Seikan - Chuzan Seikan

This is the official history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It can also be read as "Sekan." It is known as the first history book of the Ryukyu Kingdom, compiled in 1650 (Keian 3) by Shoshoken under the orders of King Shoshitsu. It consists of 5 volumes in total, with a general overview at the beginning. It includes descriptions from the creation myths to 1555 (Koji 1) during the reign of King Shosei, the fourth ruler of the Second Sho Dynasty, but for some reason, it lacks any information about the reign of King Sho Shin (reigned 1477-1526). It is written in Japanese, and the Japanese calendar is used in the preface. This is because it is based on the political reality of the Ryukyu Kingdom after the Shimazu invasion (1609), and is premised on consideration for Satsuma and Japan. It was compiled with reference to epigraphy and Chinese historical records, and also incorporates a great deal of the style of war literature such as "Hogen Monogatari." Although some have pointed out its shortcomings as a historical record, it occupies an important position in that it defined the framework for later Ryukyu historical records.

琉球(りゅうきゅう)王国の正史(せいし)。「～せかん」とも読む。1650年（慶安3）向象賢(しょうしょうけん)が王尚質(しょうしつ)の命によりまとめあげた琉球最初の史書として知られる。冒頭に総論を置き、全5巻よりなる。開闢(かいびゃく)神話から第二尚(しょう)氏王朝4代目の王尚清(しょうせい)代の1555年（弘治1）までの記述を含むが、なぜか尚真(しょうしん)代（在位1477～1526）の記事を欠いている。和文で記述されており、序文には和暦が用いられている。これは、島津侵入事件（1609）後の琉球の置かれた政治的現実を踏まえ、薩摩(さつま)、日本に対する配慮を前提としているからである。金石文や中国側の史書などを参照しつつまとめており、また『保元(ほうげん)物語』など戦記文学のスタイルもかなり取り入れている。史書としての不備が指摘されてはいるものの、後世の琉球の史書の枠組みを規定した点で重要な位置を占めている。
