Parsifal

An epic poem by Wolfram (of Eschenbach). Based on the medieval legend of the Holy Grail, it was written in the early 13th century, following Chrétien de Troyes's Perceval, and consists of 16 volumes and about 25,000 lines. It tells the story of Parsifal (meaning a pure fool), who grew up in the forest, joining the Knights of the Round Table, and after many hardships, growing into an ideal knight with faith and becoming the lord of the Holy Grail Castle. There are more than 80 manuscripts, including fragments. It is considered to be the prototype of the educational novel. Wagner's music drama Parsifal was inspired by it and premiered in 1882. It consists of three acts and is called a ``stage sacred festival play.''

ウォルフラム（エッシェンバハの）の叙事詩。中世の聖杯伝説に基づき，クレティアン・ド・トロアの《ペルスバル》に次いで13世紀初期に成立，16巻約２万5000行からなる。森で育ったパルチファル（清らかな愚者の意）が，円卓の騎士に加わり，苦労を重ねた末，信仰に立つ理想的騎士に成長し，聖杯城主となるまでを描く。断片も含め，80種以上の写本が残る。教養小説の原型とされる。ワーグナーの楽劇《パルジファルParsifal》はこれに暗示を受けたもので，1882年初演。３幕からなり，〈舞台神聖祭典劇〉と呼ばれる。
