A general term for Japanese sardine (Clupeidae), round herring (Pueraria), and anchovy (Engraulidae), or for closely related species. The most well-known of these is the Japanese sardine. There are more than a dozen known species of sardines in the world, which form important fishing grounds in various regions. Among them, the sardine ( Sardinops caeruleus ) from the west coast of North America, the anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicolus ) from the west coast of South America, and the pilchard ( Sardina pilchardus ) from Europe are particularly well-known.
