A general term for Japanese sardine (Clupeidae), round herring (Pueraria), and anchovy (Engraulidae), or for closely related species. The most well-known of these is the Japanese sardine. There are more than a dozen known species of sardines in the world, which form important fishing grounds in various regions. Among them, the sardine ( Sardinops caeruleus ) from the west coast of North America, the anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicolus ) from the west coast of South America, and the pilchard ( Sardina pilchardus ) from Europe are particularly well-known. ニシン目ニシン科のマイワシ,ウルメイワシ科のウルメイワシとカタクチイワシ科のカタクチイワシの総称,またはこれらに近縁種を含めたものの総称。なかでも代表的なものはマイワシである。 世界に産するイワシ類は十数種知られており,各地で重要な漁場を形成している。とくに,北アメリカ西岸のサーディンSardinops caeruleus(英名sardine),南アメリカ西岸のアンチョビーEngraulis encrasicolus(英名anchovy),ヨーロッパのピルチャードSardina pilchardus(英名pilchard)などがよく知られている。
