In a broad sense, it refers to an educational movement based on Marxist educational thought. From the standpoint of the proletariat, or working class, it aims for the social liberation of workers and their personal development, including the guarantee of the right to education, and is practiced as an anti-establishment educational movement in capitalist societies, and as a state policy and movement of mass organizations in socialist societies. This type of educational movement can be traced back to mid-19th century Britain. At that time, working-class children had long been left illiterate due to poor educational environments, even after the Industrial Revolution.
