Western Emperor of the Roman Empire. Reigned 425-455. After the death of Emperor Honorius, the usurper John of Rome was defeated by the Eastern Roman army, he became Western Emperor at the age of six. He was under the guardianship of his mother Galla Placidia, but during a time when Germanic tribes were ravaging the western part of the empire, real power of governance was seized by the able military commander Aetius. In 454, he killed Aetius with his own hands and worked energetically to regain control of the empire, but the following year he was killed by Aetius' subordinates. [Goto Atsuko]

ローマ帝国西帝。在位425‐455年。ホノリウス帝死後ローマ市に立った簒奪帝ヨハンネスが東ローマ軍に倒されたのち，6歳で西帝となる。母ガラ･プラキディアの後見を受けていたが，ゲルマン諸族が帝国西部を蹂躙する時代にあって，統治の実権は有能な武将アエティウスに奪われた。454年そのアエティウスをみずからの手で殺害し，統治権を回復すべく精力的に行動したが，翌年アエティウスの部下により殺害された。【後藤篤子】
