Pulse column

Japanese: パルスコラム（英語表記）pulse column

A type of liquid-liquid extraction equipment. Also called a pulsed extraction tower. In a perforated plate type extraction equipment, this imparts pulsation to the liquid in the extraction equipment to ensure smooth flow of the liquid through the perforated plate and to improve dispersion and contact between the light and heavy liquids. A schematic of the equipment is shown in the figure. It is said that extraction operations are possible even with combinations of light and heavy liquids with relatively similar densities. On the other hand, if the pulsation is too large, the liquid droplets are likely to become emulsions, and backmixing between the stages occurs, reducing the efficiency of the equipment and increasing the energy load.

液液抽出装置の一つ。脈動抽出塔ともいう。多孔板型抽出装置において多孔板を通る液の流れを円滑に行い，軽液と重液の分散，接触を良好にするために抽出装置内の液に脈動を与えるものである。装置の概略を図に示す。軽液と重液の密度が比較的近い組合せでも抽出操作が可能になるといわれる。一方，あまり脈動を大きく与えると液滴がエマルジョンになりやすく，また段間の逆混合を起こして装置の効率が下がり，さらにエネルギー的にも負荷を増す。
