Klimt, Gustav

Japanese: クリムト(英語表記)Klimt, Gustav
Klimt, Gustav
Born: July 14, 1862, Baumgarten, Vienna
Died: February 6, 1918. Austrian painter from Vienna. He studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1876 to 1883, and in 1883 opened a studio with his brother Ernst and F. Match, producing murals and ceiling paintings for theaters and other venues. He stopped painting in 1892 when his brother died, but resumed painting in 1998, established his own style, and became one of the founders of the Vienna Secession (leaving in 1904), becoming active as a representative artist of the Austrian Jugendstil movement. His style of painting was characterized by two-dimensional decorativeness, and his gorgeous works that combined naturalistic depictions of objects with decorative abstraction made him a pioneer of Expressionism. His representative works include the ceiling painting at the University of Vienna (1900-03), "Fraudster Fritzsa Riedler" (06, Austrian Picture Gallery of the 19th and 20th Centuries), and "The Kiss" (08, same).
