〘Noun〙 In the Edo period, a wholesaler dealing with the Kinki and Chugoku regions, who was the main purveyor of products from the Kamigata region to merchants in Edo and elsewhere, or a wholesaler who shipped goods to the Kamigata region, such as Edo, the eastern provinces, and the northern provinces. There is also a theory that this was a wholesaler based in Osaka whose main job was to send rice to Kyoto, Fushimi, Yodo, and Toba, and who specialized in dealing with the Kamigata region. ⇔ Shimo-tonya. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Ichidai Onna (1686), 5 "Merchants from all over the country gathered here . The number of Kami-do-hiya and Shimo- tonya is unknown."

〘名〙江戸時代、江戸その他の商人に上方の生産品購入の肝煎りをする近畿中国筋相手の問屋、あるいは江戸・東国・北国などの上国を相手に荷出しする問屋。また、大坂にあって、もっぱら京、伏見、淀、鳥羽へ米穀を送るのを主要な仕事とし、上方専門に取引する問屋とする説もある。⇔下問屋。※浮世草子・好色一代女（1686）五「諸国の商人爰(ここ)に集りぬ。上問屋(カミドヒヤ)下問屋数をしらず」
