Geological Survey

Japanese: 地質調査所 - ちしつちょうさじょ

A national agency that conducts surveys and research on geology and underground resources. Its main duties are general geological surveys and publishing of geological maps throughout the country, as well as research on specific themes (geothermal energy development, prediction and disaster prevention of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, marine resource development, etc.). It also provides assistance for geological and underground resource surveys in developing countries. Established in 1878 as the Geology Division of the Geographical Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the suggestion of HE Naumann, it became independent as the Geological Survey of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce in 1882. After the war, it was sometimes called the Underground Resources Survey Institute, but is currently part of the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

地質，地下資源などの調査，研究を行う国家機関。国内各地の一般的地質調査と地質図の出版，特定テーマによる調査研究（地熱エネルギー開発，地震や火山噴火の予知・災害防止，海洋資源開発など）が主業務。開発途上国への地質・地下資源調査の援助等も行う。1878年H.E.ナウマンの建議によって内務省地理局地質課として発足，1882年農商務省地質調査所として独立。戦後地下資源調査所と呼んだ時期もあったが，現在は通商産業省工業技術院に所属。
