Balsa - English spelling balsa

An evergreen tree of the Sterculiaceae family (APG classification: Malvaceae). Native to the tropical regions of Central America and northern South America. It grows to a height of 30 meters and a diameter of 40 centimeters. The leaves are alternate, triangular-cordate shaped, 20-30 centimeters long, and may have 5-7 shallow lobes. The flowers are large, yellow to gray-brown, and open one at a time at the end of the stalk. There are five petals, each 10-15 centimeters long. The fruit is linear, about 30 centimeters long, and filled with seeds with reddish hairs. It grows quickly, and is said to grow 4 meters per year. The wood is yellowish white, has a regular grain, is soft, and has a specific gravity of less than 0.2. In its native area, it has long been used as a raft, and the Kon-Tiki raft voyage by Heyerdahl from Peru to Raroia Atoll in Polynesia in 1947 was made from this wood. It was also once used as a flotation material for life preservers, and was also used in soundproofing devices, taking advantage of its insulating properties. It is easy to work with, and is used in toys, and is widely known as a material for model airplanes.
