In poetry, Australian-born Charles Harpur (1813-68), Henry Kendall (1839-82), and Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833-70) began to express New World material in the manner of Old World English Romanticism or Pre-Raphaelites. With the publication of the literary paper The Bulletin in 1880, this became the nucleus of the rise of cultural nationalism (realism-based) which sought to give expression to the ethos of mateship born out of the hardships of frontier development.
