Perl - Martin L. Perl

American experimental physicist. Born in New York. Graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn in 1942, he went on to study chemical engineering at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (now the University of Science and Technology). After a break in his studies due to World War II, he graduated in 1948. He got a job at General Electric, but realized at the age of 23 that he wanted to study physics, not chemistry, so he went on to graduate school at Columbia University, where he earned his doctorate in 1955. He was also offered positions at Yale University and the University of Illinois, but instead became an associate professor at the University of Michigan, where he felt he could do research freely, even though the research level was not high at the time. In 1963, he transferred to Stanford University. In 1966, he joined a team at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) searching for new elementary particles. Using a new linear accelerator that began operation in 1973, he discovered the tau particle, a lepton (light particle) that is a relative of the electron and is about 3,500 times heavier than the electron.

In this experiment, a negatively charged electron accelerated to ultra-high speeds collided head-on with a positively charged positron, and it was confirmed that the tau particle was produced during the collision. All matter in the universe is made up of quarks, which make up the nucleus at the center of the atom, and the electrons that orbit around the nucleus, and it is now known that all of these are divided into three groups: the first generation, the second generation, and the third generation. The tau particle belongs to the third generation, and this experiment was the first in the world to confirm that the third generation, which had previously only been a theoretical hypothesis, is a reality. For his discovery of the tau particle, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1995. He shared the award with F. Reines, who discovered the neutrino.

アメリカの実験物理学者。ニューヨーク生まれ。1942年にブルックリンのジェームズマディソン高校を卒業し、ブルックリン科学技術専門学校（現、科学技術大学）に進学して化学工業を学び始める。第二次世界大戦による学業中断を経て1948年に卒業。ゼネラル・エレクトリック社に就職するが、自分がやりたかったのは化学ではなく物理だったことに23歳で気づき、コロンビア大学の大学院へ進み、1955年に博士号を取得する。エール大学、イリノイ大学からも職の申し出があったが、当時の研究レベルは高くなかったものの自由に研究ができそうだったミシガン大学で準教授となり、1963年にはスタンフォード大学に移籍した。1966年に、新しい素粒子を探索するスタンフォード線形加速器研究所（SLAC：Stanford Linear Accelerator Center）のチームに参加。1973年に稼動した新型の線形加速器を使い、電子の約3500倍の重さをもつ、電子の仲間であるレプトン（軽粒子）のひとつ「タウ粒子」を発見した。

　この実験では、超高速に加速したマイナスの電気をもつ電子と、プラスの陽電子を正面衝突させ、その際にタウ粒子が生成されたことを確認した。宇宙のあらゆる物質は、原子の中心にある原子核を構成する「クォーク」や、その原子核の周りを回る電子の仲間などで構成されているが、現在では、いずれも「第一世代」「第二世代」「第三世代」の3グループに分かれることがわかっている。タウ粒子はこのうち第三世代に属し、それまでは理論上の仮説だった第三世代が現実のものであることを、世界に先駆けて実験で確認した。タウ粒子の発見により、1995年のノーベル物理学賞を受賞した。ニュートリノを発見したF・ライネスとの同時受賞であった。
