Tamanayaga (English spelling) The dark sword grass

A moth belonging to the family Noctuidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. Its origin is unclear because it is distributed almost worldwide, but some say it is from South America. Its wingspan is about 50 mm. Its forewings are gray-brown and its hindwings are white, but the wing veins and outer edges are dark. The larvae are herbivorous and often cause damage to crops and fodder crops. The adults are capable of migrating medium distances, and moths that land on cultivated pastures can cause large outbreaks of larvae. It is distributed widely in Japan, except for Hokkaido, but the northern limit for overwintering is said to be approximately the southern Tohoku region. This species belongs to the subfamily Noctuinae of the family Noctuidae, and many species of this subfamily are distributed in the inland grasslands of Eurasia and the savannahs of Africa. The larvae hide near the surface of the soil and are active at night, biting off the roots of herbs and crops to eat them, so they are also called cutworms.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目ヤガ科に属するガ。ほとんど全世界に分布するため、原産地は明らかでないが、南アメリカとする説もある。はねの開張50ミリメートル内外。前翅は灰褐色、後翅は白色であるが翅脈と外縁付近は暗色を帯びる。幼虫は草食性で、しばしば作物や飼料作物に被害を与えるほか、成虫には中距離の移動性があり、造成牧草地に着地したガから幼虫の大発生をみることがある。日本では北海道以外に広く分布するが、越冬可能な北限はおよそ東北地方南部であるという。本種は、ヤガ科のうちのモンヤガ亜科に属し、この亜科のガはユーラシアの内陸草原、アフリカのサバンナ地帯に多数の種を分布する。幼虫は土中の地表近くに潜み、夜間に活動して草本や農作物の根際をかみ切って食べるのでネキリムシともよばれている。
