Asakusa is a district in the eastern part of Taito Ward, Tokyo. It is a temple town of Kinryu-zan Sensoji Temple, the head temple of the Shokannon sect, and its name comes from the Fu-Raijinmon Gate of Sensoji Temple, which enshrines the statues of the wind god and thunder god. On both sides of the street from the Sanmon Gate to the Kaminarimon Gate is the Nakamise shopping street, which is bustling all year round and displays products that are full of the atmosphere of the downtown area. Nakamise began during the Genroku period (1688-1704) and is said to have prospered especially during the Kyoho period (1616-1736).
