1630‐1718 French historian. Born in Tulle. Served as secretary to the renowned scholar, Archbishop Pierre de Marca of Toulouse, under whose guidance he was taught. After the death of the archbishop, he served as Colbert's librarian for 30 years until 1700, collecting old books. He purchased many of the old books that made Colbert's library famous, including precious documents such as Mazarin's notebooks and Fouquet's library. In 1689, he became a professor at the Royal College of Professors (later the Collège de France), and in 1707, he became its president, publishing many exemplary editions of medieval Latin manuscripts.
