Baluze (English)

1630‐1718
French historian. Born in Tulle. Served as secretary to the renowned scholar, Archbishop Pierre de Marca of Toulouse, under whose guidance he was taught. After the death of the archbishop, he served as Colbert's librarian for 30 years until 1700, collecting old books. He purchased many of the old books that made Colbert's library famous, including precious documents such as Mazarin's notebooks and Fouquet's library. In 1689, he became a professor at the Royal College of Professors (later the Collège de France), and in 1707, he became its president, publishing many exemplary editions of medieval Latin manuscripts.

フランスの歴史家。テュルに生まれる。碩学の誉れ高いトゥールーズの大司教ピエール･ド･マルカの秘書を務め，その薫陶を受けた。大司教の没後，1700年までコルベールの司書として30年間古書収集に当たり，マザランの手帳，フーケの手文庫などを含む貴重な文献をはじめ，コルベールの文庫の名を高からしめる古書の多くを購入した。1689年王立教授団(のちのコレージュ･ド･フランス)の教授，1707年には団長となり，多くの中世ラテン古文書の模範的校訂本を出版した。
