Takehiko Kurushima

A children's writer. Born in Morimachi, Oita Prefecture (now Kusumachi). Graduated from Kwansei Gakuin University. He first wrote children's reading material for Shonen Sekai (first published in 1895) under the name Onoe Shinbei, and later studied under Iwaya Sazanami, where he was active in creating fairy tales and reciting children's stories. He particularly focused on reciting children's stories, and in 1906 (Meiji 39) he established the Fairy Tale Club, laying the foundations for it. He was also active in running kindergartens and founding the Boy Scouts. A children's story monument was erected in his hometown to commemorate his achievements as a pioneer of reciting children's stories. His main work is Lectures on the Art of Dowa (1973, Japan Youth Culture Center).

児童文学者。大分県森町(現玖珠(くす)町)に生まれる。関西学院卒業。初め尾上新兵衛の名で『少年世界』(1895創刊)に児童読み物を執筆、のちに巌谷小波(いわやさざなみ)に師事してお伽噺(とぎばなし)創作、口演(こうえん)童話に活躍した。とりわけ口演童話に力を入れ、1906年(明治39)にはお伽倶楽部(くらぶ)をおこし、その礎(いしずえ)を築いた。また幼稚園の経営、ボーイスカウトの結成に活躍。口演童話の開拓者としての業績をたたえ、郷里に童話碑が立てられている。主著に『童話術講話』(1973・日本青少年文化センター)がある。
